Developing a solidarity-driven, innovative response
The Day Center for Alzheimer's patients is an example of a new generation of specialized medical facilities with a medical and social dimension. It embodies the efforts of a committed medical community and responds to calls from civil society on the urgent need to manage Alzheimer's disease.
The first of its kind in Morocco, this pilot center has a threefold mission: to provide therapeutic and medical treatment to Alzheimer's patients, support their family caretakers and train healthcare personnel.
Offering a holistic approach to care and relieving patients' families and caregivers
The center provides day care for people with mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease living at home. It offers them integrated and customized services, combining medical, social, preventive and curative care. It includes a medical unit and a social support unit where various types of care are provided: psychiatry, psycho-motricity, neurology, speech therapy and physiotherapy, cognitive simulation, artistic mediation, etc. Treatments are based on non-drug therapies and rely on cognitive stimulation.
In addition, the center provides support to families and caregivers at home. The aim is to enhance their role and provide them with some relief. Awareness-raising and information activities focusing on the latest therapeutic and medical advances, prevention and care advice, but counselling and psychological support are also made available to families and caregivers.
Training and anticipating needs for specialized skills
The center is intended to serve as a national benchmark, whose expertise will be leveraged to train qualified healthcare staff. To this end, training modules are provided by partner associations' volunteer specialists. This will help prepare skilled resource staff for future similar centers across Morocco and meet the growing need for home-based caregivers.
